Trip Introduction:
Located in the central plains of the Yellow River valley, Ping Yao ancient city is one of China's best conserved ancient cities. It had been made well known to the world outside of China largely thanks to the award winning film “Raise the Red Lantern” in 1991. In 1997, Ping Yao also became enlisted as UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage Site for its intact Ming Dynasty Wall, and courtyard dwellings remaining from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was China’s financial capital during the late Qing Dynasty with more than half of China’s financial institutions, among them is Rishengchang which is known as the first bank in China, and is located inside the city walls. While much of Pingyao's charm rests within the old city walls, our especially designed tour to Pingyao will also have you visiting some of the hidden gems outside of the old city which are less mentioned in popular tourist guides, but will certainly give you more insight regarding the history and culture of the area. Included on our program are the "Musts" of the ancient city such as the the ancient city walls, Rishengchang Bank, Confucious Temple, Governor's Office etc. To make this trip extra special, we have included a noodle making show, as well as a side trip to an ancient fortress village with secret underground passageways, and a visit to a cave village that is typical in the yellow earth plateau region.
