The rice terraces located in the mountainous area of Yuanyang county in the south of Yunnan province is one of the most amazing places in the world. The Yuanyang Rice Terraces occupy over a hundred thousand square kilometers of land, and it is the masterpiece crafted by the Hani people over a period of 1300 years! The altitude of the terraces range from 144 to 2000 meters, and they are irrigated by water which is supplied through 4653 irrigation canals throughout the mountains!
The weather in the Yuanyang rice terraces is never extreme, it is hot but tolerable during the summer and mild during the winter, which makes it pleasant to travel to all year round. The terraces are flooded with water from November through April, which gives the dramatic mirror like effect that photographers love. In the summer months, the terraces comes alive as the rice corps become green. Autumn from September to October is the time to witness the golden harvest, and farmers busying about in the fields.
Yuanyang boasts colorful ethnic festivals. The home of many ethnic groups, Yuangyang impresses visitors by its enchantingly beautiful costumes, mysterious, centuries-old ritual ceremonies and diversified ethnic songs and dances.
